In the Mix

Justin BieberPop · Canada

Clean, glossy pop with R&B smoothness: big hooks, light falsetto and grooves that sit just behind the beat.

AdeleSoul ballads · UK

Piano, a huge chest voice and nowhere to hide. Proof that one honest take can fill an arena.

Names only, to point you toward the sound. Go listen to the originals.

Music Genres

The Soundtrack

From the stage lights to the lounge after midnight.

Arena Rock

1970s–80s · US & UK

Songs engineered to fill stadiums: huge hooks, chant-along choruses and power ballads with lighters in the air.

Instruments
Layered guitars, big reverb drums, keyboards, stacked vocals
Feel
Mid-tempo anthems, fist-pump on 2 and 4

Glam Rock

Early 1970s · UK

Glitter, platform boots and a stomp. Theatrical and catchy, with crunchy riffs.

Instruments
Crunchy guitar, handclaps, piano, saxophone
Feel
Stomping 4/4 boogie, about 120–140 BPM

Hard Rock

Late 1960s–70s

Riff-first and loud, with blues roots, wailing vocals and long solos.

Instruments
Distorted guitar, heavy bass, pounding drums
Feel
Driving and muscular

Pop Anthem

1980s to now

Every section builds to one massive chorus, sometimes with a key change for the last lift.

Instruments
Synths, layered vocals, punchy drums
Feel
About 100–128 BPM, built for the drop of the chorus

Jazz Lounge

1950s · cocktail era

Low lights, soft swing, smoke-curl melodies. Background music that rewards listening.

Instruments
Piano, upright bass, brushed drums, muted trumpet, vibraphone
Feel
Slow to medium swing, relaxed

Big Band & Swing

1930s–40s

A dance-hall wall of brass trading riffs between sections, swinging hard.

Instruments
Saxes, trumpets, trombones, piano, bass, drums, guitar
Feel
Swung eighths, dance tempos about 120–200 BPM

Musical Theatre

Late 1800s to now · West End & Broadway

Songs that move the story forward, from the 'I want' song to the full-company finale. Show Boat (1927) and Oklahoma! (1943) shaped the modern form.

Instruments
Pit orchestra, ensemble voices, dance
Feel
Wide range: ballads, patter songs, showstoppers

Opera

From c.1600 · Italy

Drama told entirely through song, with an orchestra in the pit. The first big landmark is Monteverdi's L'Orfeo (1607).

Instruments
Trained solo voices, chorus, orchestra
Feel
Flows between story-moving recitative and show-stopping arias

Adhunik Geet

1950s onward · Nepal

Nepal's 'modern song': poetic lyrics over lush orchestration, popularised on Radio Nepal. Narayan Gopal is remembered as its great voice.

Instruments
Harmonium, strings, flute, tabla, guitar
Feel
Slow and lyrical, with room for the voice
Art styles
Art Deco1920s–30sGold geometry, sunbursts, skyline glamour
Pop Art1950s–60sComic dots, bold flat colour, pop icons

Theatre & Opera

Stage & Aria

Velvet seats. The overture starts. Here is what's on the bill.

Theatre forms

Greek Tragedy

5th c. BCE · Athens

Masks, a chorus and open-air hillside theatres. Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides competed at the festival of Dionysus.

Shakespearean Stage

c.1590–1613 · London

A thrust stage under an open sky (the Globe, 1599). Few sets: the words paint the scene, and boys played the women's roles.

Musical Theatre

1800s → now

Song, dialogue and dance carrying one story, from Broadway to the West End.

Kabuki

Early 1600s · Japan

Bold kumadori make-up, frozen 'mie' poses, a runway through the audience (hanamichi) and revolving stages.

Noh

14th c. · Japan

Founded by Kan'ami and Zeami: carved masks, slow precise movement, chant and a painted pine on a bare stage.

Lakhe Dance

Newar tradition · Kathmandu Valley

A masked Lakhe dancer with a red face and wild mane leaps through the streets to drums and cymbals, especially during Indra Jatra.

Physical Theatre

20th c. → now

The body tells the story: mime, movement and dance first, words second. Jacques Lecoq's Paris school (1956) shaped it.

Tales & Stories

Tour Tales & Backstage Stories

Short fiction from the road.

Tale 01

Soundcheck at 4 PM

The arena is empty and enormous. One kick drum echoes for a whole second. The crew laughs at a bad joke over the talkback, someone tests a mic with “one-two, Sadhana”, and for a moment the empty seats feel like they are already singing back.

Tale 02

The Setlist on the Floor

Every show starts with a piece of paper taped to the stage, songs in thick black marker. By the encore it is soaked, stepped on and torn. A kid in the front row asks for it. That setlist, crumpled and perfect, is worth more than any trophy.

Tale 03

Green Room, 11:58 PM

Shoes off, ears ringing, a tray of cold noodles. Someone puts on a quiet song and the whole band goes silent. That is the real afterparty: ten people too tired to talk, sharing one song after twenty thousand voices.

Neon Verses

Poems from the Second World

Original short poems written for this site. Tap a painting or sketch above to find more paired with the art.

Arcade After Midnight

Pink tubes buzzing on a rainy wall,
a high score blinking just to make me stay;
the jukebox knows the chorus of my youth
and plays it like it never went away.
Insert a coin, insert a little nerve:
the neon swears the night will never fray.

Synth Highway

Chrome horizon, violet sun,
a cassette rewinding the stars;
we drive where the grid meets the sea
with the radio tuned to our scars.
Faster than yesterday, softer than rain,
the city glows pink in the mirrors of cars.

Stadium Lights

When the phones rise up, they make a sky,
a constellation singing every line;
for three short minutes no one is alone,
your heartbeat keeping time with mine.
The lights come down. The chorus stays,
a star you carry home like wine.
Brain on Beat

Your Mind on Music

True, documented findings about the brain and music.

The beat moves you

Just hearing a steady beat activates motor areas of the brain, even when you're sitting still (Grahn & Brett, 2007).

Predict the drop

Part of the pleasure in music comes from the brain predicting what comes next and enjoying the surprise when a song bends the rules.

Three cones, endless neon

Your eyes have three types of cone cells, and every colour you see, neon pink included, is the brain blending their signals.

Sing together, bond together

Singing, dancing or moving in sync with other people is linked to feeling closer to them.

Star Lessons

Beginner tips for the stage, the look and the brand. Tap to open.

DJ Diva: DJ Diva in the house. Every star started as a beginner.

01Stage presence

Use the whole stage: left, centre and right. Make eye contact with different parts of the crowd, and don’t be afraid of stillness; one calm moment makes the big moments hit harder.

02Mic technique

Hold the mic a few centimetres from your mouth and pull it back slightly on loud notes. Don’t cup the mesh head with your hand: it muffles your voice and can cause feedback.

03Warm up your voice

Before singing, warm up gently: humming, lip trills and slow sirens from low to high. Drink water, and rest your voice when it feels tired. Never push through pain.

04Setlist pacing

Open with something strong, vary the tempo so energy rises and falls, and save the biggest song for the end. Plan what you say between songs so the show flows.

05Fashion & styling

Build a signature look: a colour palette, a silhouette or one item people remember. Match it to the mood of your music, and make sure you can move, breathe and sing comfortably in it.

06Branding for artists

Keep your name, handle, profile picture, colours and fonts consistent everywhere. Share a clear story about who you are and why you make music. Consistency is what helps people recognise you.
